LEGENDS OF MY ACADIA

Just like a re-composed image of a beautiful landscape, the stories and legends passed down from our cultural heritage are both filled with accuracy and the beauty of our ancestors’ imagination.  I have long been obsessed with the most mysterious tales from our Acadian storytellers, the accounts of that which is unexplained:  the ghosts, the witches, the werewolves, the demons… and everything in between.  With the stories that many have told me, I’ve found my own way to speak.  In this series of six legends, I tell the fables based on the story I, myself, documented (and sometimes experienced), and speak it again from the viewpoint of Colette Savoie, my grandmother whose family heritage truly included the traditional skill of fortune telling.  Colette, the imagined character, is the voice of these authentic Acadian legends, each appropriated to a region of Acadia:  Buctouche, Ste-Anne-de-Kent, Kouchibougouac, Richibouctou, Shediac, and Memramcook.  The visual representations displayed encompass the scenic and breathtaking beauty of these locations, and within it, a written portion of the legend is visually integrated.

Tout comme une image recomposée d'un beau paysage, les histoires et les légendes transmises par notre patrimoine culturel sont à la fois remplies de vérités et de la beauté de l'imagination de nos ancêtres. J'ai longtemps été obsédé par les histoires les plus mystérieuses de nos conteurs acadiens, les récits de ce qui est inexpliqué : les fantômes, les sorcières, les loups-garous, les démons… et tout le reste. Avec les histoires que beaucoup m'ont racontées, j'ai trouvé ma propre façon de parler. Dans cette série de six légendes, je raconte les fables à partir de l'histoire que j'ai moi-même documentée (et parfois vécue) et la redis du point de vue du personnage fictif de Colette Savoie, ma "grand-mère" dont l'héritage familial incluait véritablement le savoir-faire traditionnel de lire la fortune avec des cartes à jouer. Colette, le personnage imaginé, est la voix de ces légendes acadiennes authentiques, chacune appropriée à une région de l'Acadie : Bouctouche, Ste-Anne-de-Kent, Kouchibougouac, Richibouctou, Shediac et Memramcook. Les représentations visuelles affichées englobent la beauté scénique et époustouflante de ces lieux, et en son sein, une partie écrite de la légende y est intégrée.
